Art Director: Jeremie Blehm

Name:
Jeremie Blehm

Job Title:
Art Director

What’s your background?
Graphic Design, Skateboarding, Graffiti, Fine Art.

How did you find out you can make a living as a creative?
My friend’s Ricky and Alex went to art school together and they both convinced me after two years.

What was the first creative job you were paid for?
I was asked to do a painting for a gallery owner who was hanging my work at the time. It was only $500 but after a year of trying to sell my paintings it was pretty exciting.

How long have you been working in ATL and how long have you lived here?
Ive been working in Atlanta for six years. I have lived in and around Atlanta all my life.

Where are you working now and how did you get there?
Right now I’m at IQ Interactive. I came here after WestWayne stole my friends agency I used to work for.

What do you expect from a Creative Director?
Inspiration, a will to fight for what’s right and an uncanny ability to turn any box into a hat.

How does ATL compare to cities like NYC and San Fran on a creative level?
Its hard to say. Its just you and whatever materials you need to get your work done. Your address is irrelevant .

Internationally?
It is so hard to compare cities. It’s not an apples to apples thing. I love the stuff coming out of the Amsterdam and Paris. Other places like London and Berlin seem to be stuck in the same place as the U.S.

Can you share with us your best ATL experience?
Skating with friends in the city. 3am and nothing to do but hangout in the streets.

And your worst?

If you had the chance, what advice would you give MARTA?
More busses to use the infrastructure thats already in place.

How do you feel about kids coming out the Creative Circus, Portfolio Center and other Atlanta-based schools then moving away to find better jobs?
They aren’t from here so I don’t have a problem with it. Its the people who grew up in or around Atlanta and become phenomenal talents and then bolt. Where you grow up is a big art of what you become, don’t forget it.

What does this city have to do in order to keep fresh new creative talent here?
Its up to the community. We need more exhibitions. Group projectsfor creative’s to participate in.

What are some key elements you look for when job searching?
Quality of work, Process, and Culture.

How do you feel about headhunters?
They are good folks just doing their job. Just like me.

How do you feel about award shows in creative fields?
Getting recognition from your peers is a good thing. But the shows are crowded with elbow rubbing famewhores who will do anything to get noticed. Its just another part of the industry I love but don’t want anything to do with.

Name 3 of your top magazines you have to read each month?
IDEA, Com. Arts, Ad Busters

What music are you diggin’ right now?
The Books

What’s overrated/underrated in ATL?
The Falcons/The Braves

What’s your favorite Adult Swim Show?
The Venture Bros.

If you could pitch them a show idea right now, what would it be?
Hank and Dean live together on Mars above a brothel.

What’s your secret to staying creative?
I’m creative?

Who do you respect?
People who make things just for fun.

Why do you wake up in the morning?
Freak out and plan my whole day.

What’s the difference between a Designer and a Art Director?
Lots of drama and ego.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
It’s hard for me to say. My boss asked me that not too long ago. Here’s the same answer. I don’t know. I could go more into 3D or AS development. I just have to see what sticks.

Favorite sneaker brand?
No advertising. Please.

Ham or Turkey on a sandwich?
Turkey

Laptop or Desktop?
Lappy

Digital or Film photography?
Digital for me.

What’s your favorite architectural structure in Atlanta?
Oak Hill in Piedmont Park.

What do you think of Atlanta’s 17th street bridge?
It’s pretty convenient. I am interested to see how the whole Atlantic station thing will pan out. I’m thinking government housing by 2027.

Favorite Atlanta icon/landmark (person, building, restaurant, etc)?
Baton Bob

Naked Dog or Chili Dog from the Varsity?
Chili and Onion Rings
