What’s your background?
School then assisting the best. Oh, and shooting.

How did you find out you can make a living as a creative?
I’m still trying to figure this one out.

Ah, I don’t know, Probably a skate shot for Thrasher.

5 friends cruising around downtown (skateboarding of course) on a cool fall night.

And your worst?
Getting thrown in jail for having the best experience.

If you had the chance, what advice would you give MARTA?
More rail lines, and less time in between trains. Not sure if that would even matter though, they’ll always find a way to blow it.

How do you feel about kids coming out the Creative Circus, Portfolio Center and other Atlanta-based schools then moving away to find better jobs?
Gotta do what you gotta do…..Money talks bullshit walks I guess.

What does this city have to do in order to keep fresh new creative talent here?
Maybe build an ocean, that’s what I’d vote for at least.

What are some key elements you look for when job searching?
Cool folks, cool locations, cold hard cash.

How do you feel about headhunters?
Like the kind from the Brady Bunch when they went to Hawaii?

How do you feel about award shows in creative fields?
I guess they are good. I’ve yet to be a part of any so I can’t really answer this.

Art Director: Jeremie Blehm

Name:
Jeremie Blehm

Job Title:
Art Director

What’s your background?
Graphic Design, Skateboarding, Graffiti, Fine Art.

How did you find out you can make a living as a creative?
My friend’s Ricky and Alex went to art school together and they both convinced me after two years.

What was the first creative job you were paid for?
I was asked to do a painting for a gallery owner who was hanging my work at the time. It was only $500 but after a year of trying to sell my paintings it was pretty exciting.

How long have you been working in ATL and how long have you lived here?
Ive been working in Atlanta for six years. I have lived in and around Atlanta all my life.

Where are you working now and how did you get there?
Right now I’m at IQ Interactive. I came here after WestWayne stole my friends agency I used to work for.

What do you expect from a Creative Director?
Inspiration, a will to fight for what’s right and an uncanny ability to turn any box into a hat.

How does ATL compare to cities like NYC and San Fran on a creative level?
Its hard to say. Its just you and whatever materials you need to get your work done. Your address is irrelevant .

Internationally?
It is so hard to compare cities. It’s not an apples to apples thing. I love the stuff coming out of the Amsterdam and Paris. Other places like London and Berlin seem to be stuck in the same place as the U.S.

Can you share with us your best ATL experience?
Skating with friends in the city. 3am and nothing to do but hangout in the streets.

And your worst?

If you had the chance, what advice would you give MARTA?
More busses to use the infrastructure thats already in place.

How do you feel about kids coming out the Creative Circus, Portfolio Center and other Atlanta-based schools then moving away to find better jobs?
They aren’t from here so I don’t have a problem with it. Its the people who grew up in or around Atlanta and become phenomenal talents and then bolt. Where you grow up is a big art of what you become, don’t forget it.

What does this city have to do in order to keep fresh new creative talent here?
Its up to the community. We need more exhibitions. Group projectsfor creative’s to participate in.

What are some key elements you look for when job searching?
Quality of work, Process, and Culture.

How do you feel about headhunters?
They are good folks just doing their job. Just like me.

How do you feel about award shows in creative fields?
Getting recognition from your peers is a good thing. But the shows are crowded with elbow rubbing famewhores who will do anything to get noticed. Its just another part of the industry I love but don’t want anything to do with.

Name 3 of your top magazines you have to read each month?
IDEA, Com. Arts, Ad Busters

What music are you diggin’ right now?
The Books

What’s overrated/underrated in ATL?
The Falcons/The Braves

What’s your favorite Adult Swim Show?
The Venture Bros.

If you could pitch them a show idea right now, what would it be?
Hank and Dean live together on Mars above a brothel.

What’s your secret to staying creative?
I’m creative?

Who do you respect?
People who make things just for fun.

Why do you wake up in the morning?
Freak out and plan my whole day.

What’s the difference between a Designer and a Art Director?
Lots of drama and ego.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
It’s hard for me to say. My boss asked me that not too long ago. Here’s the same answer. I don’t know. I could go more into 3D or AS development. I just have to see what sticks.

Favorite sneaker brand?
No advertising. Please.

Ham or Turkey on a sandwich?
Turkey

Laptop or Desktop?
Lappy

Digital or Film photography?
Digital for me.

What’s your favorite architectural structure in Atlanta?
Oak Hill in Piedmont Park.

What do you think of Atlanta’s 17th street bridge?
It’s pretty convenient. I am interested to see how the whole Atlantic station thing will pan out. I’m thinking government housing by 2027.

Favorite Atlanta icon/landmark (person, building, restaurant, etc)?
Baton Bob

Naked Dog or Chili Dog from the Varsity?
Chili and Onion Rings

Flash Programmer: Kenny Bunch

Name:
Kenny Bunch of Dreamsocket

Job Title:
President/Chief Architect

Where can people see your work?
www.kennybunch.com

Work Experience:
Kenny Bunch’s passion for programming began at age 8 on an Adam computer. By creating his own choose-your-own-adventure games, he realized early on that he could use the computer as a tool to make his dreams a reality. From that point forward, his mindset became a motivation to create things that would make people’s lives better. The first real world opportunity he was given to achieve this goal was at CNN. Serving as the lead Flash developer, he began working on easing the ways the world consumes information, communicates, and entertains itself. Of course, with every quest, there are many markers before the finish. Moving past CNN, he has held positions as lead Flash application developer at Cartoon Network/Adult Swim and as Software Architect at both Bellsouth and Gametap. In an effort to further expand his vision and experience, Kenny formed Dreamsocket. Alongside the work with Turner, Dreamsocket provided an outlet to work with clients like CBS, Rolling Stone, Nascar, Motorola, IBM, ING, and a host of others. Each of these positions, projects, and experiences have been one more step in the quest. Whether it’s a smile on a child’s face from owning digital cards from Cartoon or connecting long distance friends with communication applications, he is moving forward. However, his goal has not been reached, and each day Kenny strives to do something new in order to give back to world that has given him so much.

Clients you’ve helped:
Adult Swim, Avaya, Bellsouth, CBS, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney, Gametap, ING, Nascar, Motorola, Playstation, Rolling Stone, SonyBMG, etc.

What do you think needs to happen for ATL to be respected on a worldwide creative level?
Personally, I think there is respect given to Atlanta, but I believe that it doesn’t have the same spirits as some cities do. It may be in the lifestyle that the city exudes, or it may be how the industry here works. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it boils down to collaboration. Creativity breeds from creatives owning what they do and being the primary voice. Creativity or brilliance can never be fully realized if it is controlled by those with outside interests. Atlanta needs something akin to an artist movement or spark to rally around in the design and interactive community. If you look at the most brilliant work, it is done by a handful of people that all have something to offer, working together in an unorthodox way. Atlanta has had Ted Turner, Mike Lazzo, Jermaine Dupri, and countless others, all who led a creative revolution in their own right. Each of them had a vision and crew. You get a vision and a passion and it can do wonders. Its all a matter of getting the right people together and driving them, and that doesn’t matter where you are.
